Extreme weather has gotten a lot of coverage the past year due to the increase in both the events and the resulting damage and loss. This year, we partnered with Independent Agent to conduct a survey on their website for the month of April measuring Agents & Brokers perceptions of extreme weather events.

In April 2022, we partnered with Independent Agent in surveying 232 Agents & Brokers on their knowledge of extreme weather facts. Only 4% of those who took the quiz received a perfect score. But don’t worry—these topics are all covered in this year’s Almanac, so you’ll be an extreme weather expert by the time you finish reading this book. Complete survey results are shown below.

1. In 2020, there were how many billion-dollar weather and climate disasters in the U.S.?

A little over half of surveyed Agents knew their stuff when it came to the number of billiondollar weather disasters that occurred in 2020. We specifically asked about the year 2020, as it holds the current record for largest number of billion dollar weather disasters.

2. Between 2000 and 2020, the U.S. Southeast Atlantic and Gulf Coast regions saw a ____% increase in high flooding days.

Although we wish the largest percent increase was not the correct answer, it unfortunately is. To read more about the current challenges facing today’s flood market, check out our articles on pages 75 and 90.

3. More than ____ U.S. homes have been identified as being at high risk for wildfire.

Agents were almost equally split on what they thought was the correct answer in regards to U.S. homes that are at high risk for wildfires. However, you may not be surprised to learn that more than 2 million of those homes are located in the state of California.

4. OSHA has federal workplace laws in place protecting employees from heat-related illnesses.

This stumped many respondents. While many thought OSHA has a federal workplace law in place for heat-related illnesses, at time of printing this Almanac, they did not. Read the article on the following page for more information on this topic, including legislation that was introduced ordering OSHA to fast-track writing a federal heat standard, and OSHA’s plans to launch a program in summer of 2022 to help prevent worker heat illness.
